God's Smuggler
Like The Hiding Place, God's Smuggler has become a 20th century Christian classic, translated into over 40 languages, with sales of more than of 12 million copies.
God's Smuggler is the story of BROTHER ANDREW, the name the Sherrills used in order to write about this man whose identity at the time was totally unknown even in Andrews home town in Holland.
Brother Andrew grew up in a devout Dutch household, feeling as so many youngsters do, that Christians lived the dullest possible lives. He dreamed of a life of adventure and daring little thinking that a Christian conversion following three shattering years in the Dutch army in Indonesia would plunge him into more danger and intrigue than he ever imagined.
Working at a factory job after his army service, Andrew was invited to a rally in Communist Poland designed to display the glories of Marxism to disillusioned young people from all around the globe. There Andrew discovered that although religious freedom was theoretically guaranteed to the fortunate citizens of the peoples republic, Bibles in fact were impossible to obtain. Back in the West, he was assured by every church authority he appealed to, that it was impossible to take Scripture into Iron Curtain countries and that in any case Christianity in these lands had been totally eliminated. From that time on Brother Andrew became a smuggler of precious cargo to the courageous but forgotten Christians of Poland, Russia, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Albania, China
The work was filled with danger, financed by faith, supported by miracles. Perhaps it was humanly impossible to connect with believers behind the Iron Curtain, but Andrew was sure nothing was too hard for God. Crossing closed borders with a suitcase bulging with Bibles, hed pray, "Lord, when You were on earth, You made blind eyes see. Now, I pray, make seeing eyes blind. Do not let the guards see whats in front of them."
Filled with humor, heartbreak and hard-won life-lessons, Brother Andrew's story has inspired millions to step out on their own journeys of faith. With its hair-breadth escapes and cast of unforgettable characters its also a riveting page-turner. Theres the Red captain who got so involved debating theology with Andrew that he forgot to arrest him. And the Serbian pastor of a Bible-less church who traveled two thousand miles on Gods order and appeared in Red Square at the very moment Brother Andrew arrived with his contraband goods.
This Dutch factory worker's near-incredible adventures testify of God's step-by-step guidance and hour-by-hour provision -- available to all who follow His call. Far from being over, Brother Andrew's current adventures are his most challenging yet. In this new millennium Andrews work today is in the "closed" societies of Islam.
